The Netflix series "When Life Gives You Tangerines," known in Korean as "Poksak Sokassuda,"
continues to achieve success not only in South Korea but also by ranking first among non-English TV shows overseas.
In particular, the title "Poksak Sokassuda," which means "Thank you for your hard work" in Jeju dialect, uses a separate English title to convey a deeper meaning to international viewers.
One interesting point is that people who are not from Jeju Island may not fully understand the meaning of "Poksak Sokassuda"
Netflix has named this drama "When Life Gives You Tangerines," which is a variation of the saying "When Life Gives You Lemons, Make Lemonade," coined by American philosopher Elbert Hubbard (1856–1915) and reinterpreted by later writers.
This expression encourages a positive mindset to overcome difficult situations by substituting "lemons" with "tangerines," a specialty product of Jeju that has a sweet taste.
In this drama, the main character, played by IU, explains, "Even if life throws you sour tangerines, it means you should make tangerine syrup and enjoy warm tangerine tea."
The titles translated into other languages focus on conveying the essence of "Poksak Sokassuda" rather than a direct translation.
The Spanish title is similar to the English one, meaning "If Life Gives You Tangerines," while the Thai version conveys the message "Let's Smile Even on Days When Tangerines Are Not Sweet."
In Taiwan, they used the idiom "苦盡甘來" (meaning "sweetness comes after bitterness") to create the title "Meeting You After Hardship," cleverly replacing the character for "sweet" with the character for "tangerine" to evoke the setting of Jeju Island.
Since its phased release starting on the 7th, "Poksak Sokassuda" has successfully captured the attention of international viewers from the first week. According to Netflix's official site, "Netflix Top 10," the view count for "Poksak Sokassuda" reached 3.6 million (with a total viewing time of 13.9 million hours) between March 3rd and 9th, achieving the number one spot among non-English TV shows just three days after its release.
It has made it to the Top 10 list in 24 countries, including South Korea, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Peru, and Bolivia.
